The Avinguda Diagonal (Diagonal Avenue) cuts through downtown Barcelona in a south-by-southwest to north-by-northeast direction. Most other streets run NW-SE or SW-NE, so that the Diagonal meets them at rather odd angles. (Look at a map of Barcelona to see for yourself.) At the location of this photo, the Diagonal consists of two times two lanes in the middle with a bus lane on either side. Next, each directions gets a grassy verge, a bike lane, a lane with no discernable purpose, a raised sidewalk, another two traffic lanes, and another side walk. The whole thing is about forty meters wide.
