How well do you know your elements?

Erlenmeyer flaskAll matter is made up of atoms, a.k.a. chemical elements. Over a hundred of such elements are known to man and 111 have received a proper a name. Some of those, like hydrogen, carbon and oxygen (numbers 1, 6 and 8), were already indentified in ancient times. Others don’t exist freely in nature and could only be synthesized in laboratories; element 111, roentgenium, the last one to be named so far, is one of those.

How well do you know the elements? In a quiet moment last night, I created a little game where you can find out. So, go ahead and play Name the Elements. You have fifteen minutes to name all 111. Be sure to post your score in the comments below!

I couldn’t resist. I had to try. I named 26 elements. I was disappointed, considering Chemistry was one of my favorite subjects in high school. I had that periodic table memorized! But once I thought about it a little, I figure my results aren’t too bad, considering I haven’t even thought about the elements in roughly 20 years (gasp!) and I had to forfeit the last 5 minutes of guessing because I’m at work and, well, duty calls! ;) It was fun!
