No-hitter wins the championship

We did it! We won the championship, and we did so in overwhelming fashion. We beat the Spijkenisse Spikes by a large margin, 9-0, in the single tie-breaker game we had to play because we finished the regular season with the same win-loss record. Even more amazing, our ace starting pitcher threw a no-hitter. He struck out eleven over the six-and-a-half-inning game and walked none. The only Spikes runners came from a trio of errors and a hit-by-pitch.
After a quick opening half inning, we built a one-run lead in the bottom of the first. In the second, we added three more runs, and another five in the third. Spikes had brought on a reliever at that point, and he succeeded in keeping us at bay for the rest of the game, but it was way too late for them. When the two-hour time limit passed in the top of the seventh, we had a 9-0 lead and the only remaining question was whether the no-hitter and the shutout would survive. Both did and we exploded in celebrations–complete with champagne–when the third out was made. As the speakers came to life with Queen’s classic “We are the champions”, we thanked Spikes for an exciting year and set off to party.
